Voter Registration Project Opportunity

The Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom is partnering with The Civics Center to host voter drives to register high school students to vote nationwide. In most states, individuals have a full year or more to register to vote before their 18th birthday. In general, these students do not register, but once they do, they vote in high numbers. Sisterhood members can receive training and support from The Civics Center and partner with local student leaders to conduct youth registration drives in their communities!

There is much at stake for the Jewish and Muslim communities during this election cycle. Through working with The Civics Center, we can engage young voters and strengthen our democracy together!

How to Get Involved

First, use The Civics Center-provided Google form to register for an introductory Zoom information session.

Next, contact your local high school and describe the proposed program using Civics Center provided scripts. Then, working with a school-designated contact, identify a student(s) who is willing to take a 1 hour training and coordinate a voter registration event at the school.

Sisterhood members, the school, and student leaders set a date for the voter registration drive, organize materials (clipboards, pens, registration forms, etc.) and familiarize themselves with answers to basic registration form questions. Pro tip- candy is a great motivator! Once the drive is complete, you can assist in delivering registration forms to the County Commissioner of Voter Registration. You can also share information on the drive (including the number of students registered) with The Civics Center, which tabulates total numbers of students registered.

If you have questions, please contact Sisterhood member Lola Kamp at [email protected] or (732) 261-1128 . Her Highland Park/Somerset chapter has already conducted two, successful, high school voter registration drives and looks forward to assisting other Sisterhood members to do the same!
